Cloud

Kubernetes & containers

Package an app once and run it anywhere: the standard way to run modern software at scale.

  • Container orchestration
  • Typical project: 6–16 weeks
  • Open source (Cloud Native Computing Foundation)

Overview

A container packages an application with everything it needs to run; Docker made the idea popular. Kubernetes runs many containers across a cluster of machines: it restarts what fails, adds capacity under load and rolls out new versions without downtime.

It is powerful but complex. Most enterprises use their cloud provider's managed version and add a platform team that gives developers a paved road: templates, pipelines and guardrails.

Names you'll meet

What's inside

  1. 1

    Containers

Each app and its dependencies in one portable image.

  2. 2

    Cluster

A control plane plus worker machines that run the containers.

  3. 3

    CI/CD & GitOps

Pipelines build images; tools like Argo CD deploy whatever is in Git.

  4. 4

    Observability

Logs, metrics and traces, often with Prometheus and Grafana.

Is it right for you?

Best for

  • Microservice architectures with many teams shipping often
  • Running one platform across clouds or on-premises
  • Workloads with spiky demand

Think twice if…

  • You run a handful of simple apps; a managed platform like App Service or Cloud Run costs less to operate
  • Nobody will own it; Kubernetes needs a platform team, not set-and-forget

Typical projects

  1. Containerise and migrate an application6–16 weeks
  2. Internal developer platform3–7 months
  3. Cluster operations and upgradesOngoing · 3–12 months

Typical ranges, not quotes. Scope, data and team size move them most.

Roles you'll hire

Questions to ask a vendor

  1. 1Which managed Kubernetes service do you recommend for us, and why?
  2. 2How do you handle cluster upgrades and security patches?
  3. 3Can our developers ship without learning Kubernetes in depth?
  4. 4How will we see cost per team or per app?
